What is like to be a VIPKid teacher? I have been teaching English online for VIPKid over the past year and when I discuss it with family and friends I am often asked about the work, the hours, and the pay. I often hear, “How do you do it?” I hope to answer some of those questions in this post and I hope they are helpful to you especially if you are considering working for VIPKid.
The Students and the Work
Currently, VIPKid education serves over 600,000 school age children that are eager to learn English. The students are awesome. You are teaching Chinese students between the ages of 4 to 13. They are often motivated to learn, and you rarely have any behavior problems. Motivated students that behave is a rarity in most traditional American schools. Some students are young so it can be a challenge to keep their attention at times. They are hard-working and eager to please their teachers. I see my students improve with the curriculum within a 25-minute lesson which creates an intrinsic benefit of doing this.
Furthermore, there are no tests to grade or a grade book to keep up with. The lessons are prepared by VIPKid, I just get up, turn on my computer and work with a single student. The VIPKid teacher gives feedback at the end of every lesson that serves as a barometer of where the student is and what they need to do to improve. The work is actually very easy. I feel gratified at the end of every lesson knowing that I helped a child acquire a skill they will use for a lifetime.
VIPKid online teaching allows you the flexibility to work the hours you want according to a schedule you set. A VIPKid teacher works on a contract that lasts 6 months. Currently, VIPKid online teaching has no minimum or maximum hours. VIPKid teachers work based on their preferences, some work full-time, some work part-time, and some work just a few hours per week. VIPKid online teaching is based on Beijing, China’s local time. Certain hours are called Peak Peak Time (PPT), these are the times that are in high demand by the students and parents. VIPKid would prefer teachers to be available during these times and often offer VIPKid teachers additional incentives to meet the demand. The actual working hours depends on where you live. I live in the US Central time zone, so I usually work from 4 to 9 am because I am 13 hours behind Beijing time.
VIPKid allows their teachers “vacation time” but this usually refers to availability. If I am not available to work for more than a week, I notify VIPKid that I am on vacation so they can inform my regular students and parents that I am not available to teach for a certain duration of time. As a VIPKid teacher, you are an independent contractor that oversees when you work and when you don’t.
Teaching English online, especially in China, is a growing industry and many companies exist to fill the growing demand. In my opinion, VIPKid online teaching is set apart by the amount of training and professional development that is available to VIPKid teachers by both VIPKid and the community of teachers that are willing to help each other. Whether you are a novice, and this is your first teaching job or a veteran teacher with many years’ experience with both VIPKid and other educational organizations, you can be successful. VIPKid provides a wealth of training materials through its teacher portal.
VIPKid teachers have set up Facebook groups, YouTube channels, and websites with everything you need to know. If you have a question about technology, taxes, teaching, and anything and everything in between, an answer is available to you. Furthermore, the amount of resources available ensures that prep time is kept to a minimum. As a veteran teacher of 15 years, just being involved with VIPKid online teaching for a very short time has provided me with resources and knowledge that has made me a better teacher overall. You have the resources to be a top-notch ESL teacher.
The Pay Check
A VIPKid teacher is paid per class. The starting rate is between $7 to $9 per class (25 minutes long) and you usually teach two classes per hour. In addition, VIPKid pays a $1 per class incentive for starting a class on time and finishing after the 25-minute duration. VIPKid pays an additional $1 per class if you teach 45 classes or more within a given month. VIPKid teachers make between $18 to $22 per teaching hour. As mentioned, you set your own hours, so you can make as much or as little money as you want. For example, if you teach for 10 hours a week (80 classes per month) and you are starting rate is $8 per class, if you are starting and finishing the classes on time, your effective hourly rate is $20 per hour. You can make an extra $800 per month working just 10 hours per week.
VIPKid pays their teachers once or twice a month, it is the teacher’s preference. I get paid twice a month and, in my experience, VIPKid has never missed a payment.
The students are awesome, the work is easy. You set your own hours and make your own schedule. The training is so rich that anyone can do this and flourish. The pay is reliable, steady, and very good. I enjoy being a VIPKid teacher and if you are looking to make some income from the comfort of your home you should consider the opportunity.
